New Year’s Day Polar Bear Dive in Onset cancelled

Dec 27, 2018

Onset’s traditional New Year’s Day Polar Bear Dive has been cancelled due to a lack of volunteers.

The event, which usually held at Onset Beach early on New Year’s Day, had been brought back in 2018 after a two-year hiatus by members of the Onset Box 5 Association. The group is made up of retired firefighters, their families and friends. It raises funds for scholarships and other causes throughout the year.

Earl Fowler, of the Box 5 Association, was instrumental in reviving the tradition last year. He said this year there simply wasn’t enough interest in putting on the event. He noted that perhaps next year the dive will return.
