The Old Company Store could be yours
The historic Old Company Store is on the market alongside two homes and a storefront as owner Shari Aussant prepares for her next chapter.
Aussant has had the buildings in her family since she was 19-years-old, when her family purchased the property in 1992. With the years ticking by and maintenance on the property becoming tedious, Assaunt said her family is ready to move on.
"We love it here, it has provided us with so much joy and so much community— we adore it," she said.
Also going up for sale is Aussant’s clothing business on the property, Mermaids on Cape Cod. She opened her store front in March 2025 selling clothes, jewelry and artisan art pieces after operating as a mobile business with a store front in West Dennis.
The Old Company store is rich in Wareham history, serving workers and families from the Tremont Nail Company. The shop operated as a general store offering candy, jewelry and books to patrons until Aussant's mother, Sandi Assad, retired in 2016.
Currently Aussant runs classes out of the building, hosting yoga, wreath-making and seaglass art sessions. She also took elements of the Old Company Store and combined them with Mermaids on Cape Cod, selling items like pickles and penny candy.
Since opening, Aussant said the kids who used to roam the shelves looking for penny candy and other treats attended the grand opening for the boutique holding their own children.
"All the magic from the Old Company Store is held in here," she said. "It's a gift. This community— there's nothing like it."
Customers like Lee Mann were gutted to hear about the closure. Mann said that when the weather outside was dreary, she could always count on the boutique to feel sunny.
"You come in just to make yourself feel good," she said. "I'm not just a customer, I'm a friend."
Aussant doesn't know quite yet what her future plans are, hoping for a buyer that can bring the same magic her family did to the area once more. With dedicated customers, she said she will, "find another place to swim to."
Whatever she does next, Aussant plans to stick around Wareham.
"I feel happy, I feel loved and beautiful because that's I've ever wanted," she said. "When I sit and think about what I want to do next, all I keep saying is, 'I just want to keep making people feel good.'"
The property was listed in early November for $1,995,000.
