Old West Wareham Academy building to become condos

Sep 19, 2023

During its Wednesday, Sept. 13 meeting, the Zoning Board of Appeals opened a hearing for the former West Wareham Academy property. The property located at 1073 Main Street will be developed into condominiums by developer Schoolhouse Rocks, LLC.

The building on the property was originally a four-room schoolhouse serving first through fourth graders. More recently, it operated as the West Wareham Academy, offering a therapeutic learning environment for students in grades seven through 12.

In 2014, the small group of students attending the school were transferred to the East Wareham Early Childhood Center. The school’s ownership was transferred to the town from Wareham Public Schools at a Town Meeting that same year.

Along with presenting its site plan to the Board, the project applicant, Patricia A McArdle, a Mattapoisett attorney and owner of BOLD Real Estate Inc., is seeking a variance and special permit as part of the conversion of the 108-year-old building into six two-bedroom and one one-bedroom condominium units.

Because McArdle could not be present in person for the meeting, the hearing was granted a continuance for Wednesday, Sept. 27.
