Onset brings the love for ‘The Ramblin’ Band’

It’s not a very common combo to see a fisherman and a fairy dancing together, but at the Summer of Love concert at the Onset Bandshell on Wednesday, July 31, the duo was joined by many others as they jammed out to music from The Ramblin’ Band.
The Ramblin’ Band is a three-piece act that specializes in “classic rock covers, rock blues and a little bit of country,” according to the group’s Facebook page. At the show, they played hits like “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker and “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band.
Dave Cunningham handled the guitar and vocals while Adam Ogonowski played on the drums. Onset resident Adam Smith filled in to play bass, taking the place of bassist Scott Hartzler who could not perform due to an injury.
According to Cunningham, Smith enthusiastically agreed to join the band on stage at the last minute.
And even though it wasn’t their traditional lineup, this trio certainly brought some energy to Onset.
“I don’t think the power trio gets enough credit,” Kat Jones, executive director of the Onset Bay Association, said.
Just like the crowd, the band’s covers mixed old and new, playing classic rock from the 20th century and also bringing in more modern songs.
Still, the band’s appeal was spread to concert goers of all ages.
Onset resident Pat Dillon said that she is a neighbor of fill-in bassist Adam Smith, who said that she loved the concert.
“This is the best thing ever,” Dillon said.
When asked what she thought of the show, 3-year-old Laila Carbone nodded her head and said that she liked the music.
The concert series’s ability to bring in people of all different backgrounds is one of the reasons that Onset Bay Association executive director Kat Jones likes it so much.
“For a few hours we all have something in common,” Jones said.
The concert series will continue throughout August every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Up next is a Neil Young tribute band on Aug. 7 and Uncle John's Banjo, a bluegrass Grateful Dead tribute band on Aug. 14. After that, the series will feature classic rock band Crankit! on Aug. 21 and the blues and soulful rock band Whiskey Saints will close out the program on Aug. 28.
