Onset firefighters graduate from officer training program

Sep 16, 2016

Three Onset firefighters graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Fire Officer 1 Training Program this year.

Firefighters Peter DiPasqua, Derek Fortes and Justin Harrington participated in the program that teaches officers to manage emergency operations, supervise personnel and communicate with the public.

Officers learn about initial “size-up” factors that help them determine which actions to do first and how to deploy manpower and equipment when they first arrive on scene.

Students then practice their command and leadership skills in exercises conducted in the simulation trailer. It allows firefighters to practice their skills in a controlled environment.

The program includes five full days of training spread out over five weeks. Students spend 35 hours in the classroom and 25 hours reading out of class. It ends with a command exercise in the simulation trailer to test a student’s leadership and emergency management skills.

The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, a division of the Department of Fire Services, offers the program tuition free.
