Pacheco helps to commemorate town anniversary

After Saturday's parade, State Sen. Marc Pacheco gathered with Summer of Celebration organizers at Town Hall to commemorate the town's 275th anniversary and congratulate the organizers on the summer's events.

Pacheco commended the Summer of Celebration Committee for all its work and thanked the town and the committee for everything they did this summer.

He recognized the Rudy Santos, the Summer of Celebration Committee president for helping the state legislature come together with the town to obtain the $25,000 in the state budget for the Wareham Summer of Celebration group.

Last July, the $25,000 earmark in the state budget was initially vetoed by Gov. Deval Patrick, who stated that the money, and funding for similar events through the state, was "non-essential" and "exceeded what he believed was necessary."

Later that month, both chambers of the state legislature voted to override Patrick's veto and supply the committee with the funds.

Pacheco presented Selectmen Alan Slavin with a resolution for the town from the state Senate, commemorating the town's anniversary.

He also presented a citation for Leroy Gomez, a Wareham musician who has played all over the world, including with the Grammy-award winning Tavares Brothers Band, to his mother, Margaret.

"He is responsible for significant cultural and musical contributions to come out of the town for countless generations," Pacheco said.
