Police continuing to investigate 'appropriate' charges in Wareham man's death
State Police are continuing to investigate which charges may be brought forth against a Brockton man who was traveling the wrong way on Route 495 on Saturday night, crashing into and killing a Wareham man.
State Police said Phendy Pamphile of Brockton was driving south on the northbound side of the highway in the area of exits 1 and 2 around 10:20 p.m. when he crashed into 43-year-old Christopher Elicier's 2012 Hyundai Veloster coupe.
Elicier was ejected from the vehicle and found on the roadway by emergency responders, according to police. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Wareham firefighters and EMTs.
As of Monday, Pamphile had not been released from the hospital.
"The State Police investigation to determine what charges are appropriate is ongoing," said State Police spokesman David Procopio.
Pamphile, who was driving a 2007 Lexus IS200 sedan, was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters using the Jaws of Life. He was transported to Tobey Hospital with a serious leg injury, and later flown to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Police said there was no indication of alcohol use in the wreckage, but that "alcohol and other contributing factors" had not been ruled out.
"Preliminary investigation by a State Police crash reconstruction expert indicates that neither driver was wearing a seatbelt," police said.
The collision occurred in the left, northbound travel lane and caused both vehicles to rotate and skid before coming to a rest. The highway was shut down in both directions between exits 1 and 2 until 1:45 a.m. on Sunday.
Troopers were responding to a call about a wrong-way driver when they discovered the crash scene.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division crews, the Wareham Fire Department and EMTs, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The investigation is being conducted by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
