WAREHAM — While the score didn’t go Wareham High School’s way in the annual powderpuff football game played Wednesday, Nov. 27 against Old Rochester Regional High School, players and coaches agreed that fun was still had.

Old Rochester defeated the Vikings 36-8 in the girls flag football game traditionally played before Thanksgiving.

Senior Evelyn Francis scored a Wareham touchdown toward the end of the game, played on a crisp fall afternoon with not a cloud above Spillane Field.

“I think it was fun,” Francis said. “There was a lot of action, and I feel like a lot of people got to play and everybody had fun.”

Francis also played in last year’s powderpuff game, which Wareham won at Old Rochester.

Coach Evan Wilga said Wareham was now 6-2 in the last eight powderpuff games against the Bulldogs.

The game is a “good tradition,” he said.

“It’s very nice to get together two towns that are separated by a short distance and just have fun the day before Thanksgiving,” Wilga said.

It was junior Sienna Cabe’s first year playing in the powderpuff game.

“It’s fun,” Cabe said. “It’s competitive.”

Cabe had a long run that set up Francis’ touchdown score.

“It was tiring because before I made like 16 runs,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’”

Coach Sam Smith said it’s “always such a fun thing” seeing the girls come out with “Viking spirit” while playing a game they’ve never played before. A group of boys on the sideline meanwhile wore tutus and served as cheerleaders.

Smith said some games have been really close and become intense while others have been blowouts for either school.

“It's always fun,” she said. “Always a good time.”
