Residents run around the bogs at inaugural Mustache Dash
More than 50 participants ran under blue skies and around the cranberry bogs at Tihonet Village for Sunday's inaugural Mustache Dash 5k. The race was sponsored by the Physical Education Student Leaders program at the Wareham Middle School.
The Physical Education Student Leaders program is a group of anywhere from 17 to 40 students at the Middle School who meet to run after school and try to develop healthy lifestyles.
The race was won by 50-year-old Tom Gelson of Marion in a time of 21:15. The first woman to cross the finish line was Allison Rossi of New Bedford in 22:45.
There were 45 entrants in the 5k and a small number of kids that participated in the "Lil Shavers Run" fun run before the race.
The proceeds of the event went to benefit the Physical Education Student Leaders program.
"The all-around purpose of the group is to promote positive choices," said Nichole Stahmer, the head of the Student Leaders program.
"We're hoping to make it a tradition," she said of the race.
