Richard M. Mathis, 79
Richard M. Mathis, 79, of Buzzards Bay, died suddenly on June 6, 2026, of complications from prostate cancer treatment.
Richard was born on September 18, 1946, in Brockton. Richard went to Brockton schools, including Cardinal Spellman High School. He had advanced training for electronics repair in Nebraska. He started working at an auto shop in Brockton when he was thirteen and that was just the first of many jobs Richard had throughout his life, some of which were jobs taken solely for the desire to learn or perfect his knowledge. Richard had been an auto mechanic (because he wanted to perfect repairing his own cars), a television repairman (which proved invaluable when he was practicing electronics repair), a welder at Quincy Shipyard, a repair technician at Logan Airport, and an electronics technician in Boston, among other positions. He was a perfectionist and very persistent at everything he attempted and was a lifelong learner of all things.
Richard had so many interests, including wind surfing (which was his absolute favorite), ballroom dancing, pickleball (which he loved and could play for several hours at a time with great happiness), cribbage, the card game Scat, car shows, bike riding, skiing, and remote-control model aircraft flying. Richard also enjoyed local COA activities, especially at the Wareham COA.
Richard is survived by his daughter Jennifer Myers, and son in law Ned Myers of Medway, MA, granddaughter Alyssa Myers of Easton MA, his sister and brother-in-law of Kingston MA along with several nephews. He also leaves behind his companion Sharon Thurston of Wareham and their little dog Maggie to whom he was her favorite person on earth.
Richard was the son of Richard T. Mathis and Mary R. Mathis of Brockton. He was predeceased by his life partner of 40 years Pauline Faye Thomas.
Richard had expressed that he wished to have a private memorial service, and his wish will be honored.
He was a gentlemanly, inquisitive, very special man who will always be missed by those who loved him.
