School committee approves proposed budget; passes it over to town

Dec 22, 2016

The School Committee approved a nearly $30 million proposed budget on Wednesday night despite one committee member’s request to delay the vote.

The budget will be presented to Town Administrator Derek Sullivan before heading to the Board of Selectmen and Finance Committee for review. Ultimately, it must be approved by voters during Town Meeting.

Despite committee member Mary Morgan's request to table voting on the budget for further discussion, committee members voted to approve the Wareham Public Schools' budget on Wednesday night.

In a 4-1 vote, members approved the $29,967,163 budget.

Morgan raised concerns over additional staffing requested by principals.

“I don't think that we ever had a discussion about whether or not we were gonna accept the principals’ request,” said Morgan.

Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood explained that five additional staff members are needed, but would cost the town around $300,000. She assured the committee that the budget numbers would not go up, but cuts may be necessary to hire more staff.

“It may be cutting or reducing some areas that we had wanted to put into place for next year. We may have to say, ‘We need to hold on that,’” said Shaver-Hood.

Committee member Cliff Sylvia supported the proposed budget and expressed his faith in the budgetary process.

“Staffing is fluid you never know what you're gonna have in terms of staffing, but you have to come up with a number that's in the best interest of the district,” said Sylvia.
