Select Board votes for favorable action on town meeting warrant items
At the Oct. 1 Select Board meeting, the board voted to support a number of items on the Town Meeting agenda, including a vote to allocate funding for Lopes Playground renovations and 20 new raised beds for Damien's food pantry garden.
The item for approval of $750,000 towards the renovation of Lopes Playground would consist of installing a new accessible playground and accessible walking paths around the perimeter. The town has already received a $100,000 grant from the state to put towards the walking paths.
Another item the board voted favorable action for was the approval of permanent fencing and 20 new raised beds for Damien’s food pantry community gardens.
The item would allocate $33,800 towards the installation of permanent fencing around the entire community gardens and for the 20 new raised beds and the irrigation needed to sustain them.
Both items would be funded through Community Preservation funds. The Community Preservation funds proposed for the playground reconstruction and for the pantry work are the result of Wareham’s participation in a state program that allows the town to collect a surtax on the value of real estate above $100,000 to be used for historic preservation, affordable housing, open space acquisition and recreation.
Voting for favorable action means the board recommends that voters support these items at the Oct. 28 town meeting.
Town meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 28 at Wareham High School at 7 p.m.
