Selectmen approve liquor license for Barnacle Bill's
Barnacle Bill's will now be serving alcohol, after the Selectmen approved a liquor license for the restaurant on Tuesday.
The restaurant, located at 3126 Cranberry Highway in East Wareham, relaunched in February under the management of Andrew and James Mattos after being closed for a period of time.
Andrew Mattos appeared before the board during the liquor license hearing and described how the restaurant has changed since his family took over.
"We changed it to more full-service dining," with waitresses instead of walk-up service. Mattos said he'd like to serve his customers a glass of wine or cocktail to help the restaurant continue its evolution.
The Mattos also own Danny’s Seafood Bar and Grill in New Bedford, named for Andrew's grandfather, Daniel, who opened it about 40 years ago.
"We added some New Bedford-style Portuguese cuisine" to Barnacle Bills, he said, adding that there's still the classic New England seafood fare on the menu. "We just added a little Portuguese flair to it."
The restaurant now has food such as chorico and caocoila -- shredded pork cooked in a Portuguese wine sauce.
Selectman Patrick Tropeano had some simple but valuable advice for Mattos: "Card everyone."
The Selectmen also advised Mattos that if the restaurant would like to close early on a slow night, they are obligated to inform the Wareham Police Department.
"If it's dead on a Tuesday night in February, nobody's going to hold you to closing at 10 [p.m.]," said Selectmen Chair Peter Teitelbaum.
The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Click here to visit Barnacle Bill's on Facebook.
