Swimmin' in the hurricane

Aug 28, 2011

Surf kicked up by Irene at beaches where there is not ordinarily surf attracted curious onlookers -- and swimmers.

"I've never been swimming in a hurricane before," said Chris Furtado of Swifts Beach as he emerged from the waves at Swifts Beach mid-afternoon. Now he has, but he didn't stay in the water too long.

Later in the day, another swimmer -- more fully attired in a wet suit -- could also be seen swimming about the Swifts Beach waves.

Emergency officials strongly discourage swimming and other water activities during hurricanes, however, for obvious reasons. It's dangerous!
