In third children’s book, Wareham writer shares ‘The Miracle of Helen the Rabbit’

Coming up with story ideas for children’s books can be difficult, but every once in awhile one just hops into your lap.

That was the case for Wareham’s Steve Rogers and his latest book, “The Miracle of Helen the Rabbit.” The story is the final installment of Rogers’ “Critter Trilogy.” Th children’s series includes “Bogey the Wonder Squirrel” and “Dogs Can Fly.” All three are partly based on true tales from Rogers’ life.

In the latest book, Rogers draws inspiration from an incident that happened soon after his mother, Helen, died in 2017.

Rogers, who is retired after a career in the insurance industry, was sitting in one of two easy chairs in a corner of his garage one morning. While watching the news and sipping coffee he looked down and saw a rabbit.

“All the doors were shut, and I have no idea how it got in here,” he said. “I picked it up and my dog came over to lick it. It was calm, the dog was calm, everybody was calm.”

After the visit, he let it outside. For months the rabbit would hang around his backyard. In the story, he takes the incident and uses it as a jumping off point for a story about a rabbit imbued with the spirit of the narrator’s recently passed mother who comes back with a message.

As with his other two books, the book’s illustrations are done by children. In this case, his six grandchildren. The book’s cover was designed by his 13-year-old neighbor and digital artist Maura Collins. And like the other books, proceeds will benefit the Wareham Free Library. Rogers was recently named a trustee and celebrated the library’s recent recertification.

With the trilogy out of the way, Rogers said he may turn back to prose. He has written one book for adults, “Lost in Love Grass,” that was published in 2010.  Another novel, potentially about a CIA operative, may be in the works soon, he said.

Rogers’ books are available online at www.Amazon.com. The “Miracle of Helen the Rabbit” will be available in a couple weeks.
