Three arrested in stabbing, subsequent disturbance at Tobey Hospital
Three people, including the former owners of the troubled White Pines Motel in East Wareham, were arrested on Friday following an early morning stabbing in Wareham and subsequent disturbance at Tobey Hospital.
Wareham Police responded to Tobey Hospital at approximately 5 a.m., where they learned that friends had transported a 25-year-old Bourne woman to the hospital with stab wounds to her back, arm, and face, according to police.
Police said that the stabbing suspect, identified as 21-year-old Karis Callanan of Plymouth, had also traveled with the victim and friends to the hospital, "although she was not injured during the altercation with the victim, who is well known to her." The knife used during the assault was recovered in the vehicle used to transport the victim to the hospital, according to police.
Police did not identify the victim, but said that her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Callanan was arrested in the parking lot and charged with attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife), and assault to murder.
Meanwhile, while officers were investigating the stabbing, 51-year-old Marie D'Italia of Bourne was allegedly observed physically assaulting a man in the parking lot, according to police. The incident was related to the stabbing, police said.
Marie D'Italia was arrested and charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct.
While officers were arresting Marie D'Italia, police said 52-year-old John D'Italia of Bourne "charged at officers and committed an assault before being brought under control and placed under arrest."
John D'Italia was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct.
The D'Italias are the former owners of the White Pines Motel in East Wareham, which was bulldozed in 2012 by the property's new owner.
The motel had a history of frequent criminal activity. It was shuttered in January of 2011, shortly after two men were stabbed to death at the property after they allegedly tried to rob a third man who was staying at the motel.
After the deaths, it was revealed that John D’Italia did not have a valid license to operate the motel and owed the town $65,000 in taxes.
According to the Treasurer/Collector’s office, the tax lien was paid off in May of 2012. At that time, the lien stood at $76,553.64 due to accrued interest.
In March, 2010, John D'Italia accused Police Chief Richard Stanley of racism and claimed the chief made racist remarks during a January, 2010, arrest of two people at the motel on drug and weapons charges. In May of that year, D'Italia recanted his statement, saying that he was "tired of being used as someone else's tool" and that "it got out of hand."
Police are continuing to investigate Friday's stabbing. The arrested parties were scheduled to be arraigned in Wareham District Court on Friday.
