Town Meeting to continue Tuesday night: Solar bylaw, Decas ‘resolution’ passed

Apr 25, 2022

Town Meeting will continue Tuesday night at 7 p.m. after three hours of often vigorous discussion on Monday.

After nearly an hour of heated discussion, voters passed an item related to the proposed Decas Community Center that was described as a “resolution” by Town Moderator Claire Smith. While certain next steps were outlined in the article, its unclear what the town’s next steps will be. Read the story here.

Voters were in favor of an updated bylaw regulating solar. Read the story here.

On the flip side, voters both voted against updating an affordable housing bylaw and against an item proposing the deletion of the original affordable housing bylaw. Read that story here.

Voters approved a $1,760,000 capital plan that will pay for new roofs on the library, the Ethel E. Hammond School and a part of the Multi-Service Center, along with some contingency funds.

Town Meeting voted to allow the Select Board to issue a long-term lease of the Tremont Nail Factory to the Bentley Companies, which has been selected as the master developer of the historic site.

“I would call this quite a win for a property that has sat dilapidated pretty much for 18 years and has done nothing but suck money out of your pockets,” said Select Board and Redevelopment Authority member Peter Teitelbaum.

Accessibility upgrades to town beaches got a boost, as voters approved spending $60,000 in Community Preservation Funds to buy beach mobility access mats for use at several locations along Onset Beach, at Little Harbor, Swifts Beach and Swifts Neck Beach. Harbormaster Garry Buckminster noted that the mats are made of recycled materials and can be easily rolled up for storage during the winter or rough storms. The mats are expected to last for 10 years.

Still up for votes are items including a temporary moratorium on new solar projects, a proposal to hold future Town Meetings on Saturdays and two major sewer upgrades.

Town Meeting will continue at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Wareham High School auditorium, 7 Viking Drive.
