Wareham Athletic Booster Club celebrates new concession stand at Spillane Field

Wareham’s Athletic Booster Club celebrated the grand opening of a new concession stand at Spillane Field on Friday night moments before the Vikings squared off against Greater New Bedford.

The new concession stand replaces the previous stand and ticket booth which Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino said were beyond repair.

“It’s a beautiful building compared to before,” Palladino said. “We’re extremely thankful to everyone who helped make this happened.”

Wareham voters approved $55,500 in community preservation funds for the construction of the new stand as well as an upgraded sound system for Spillane Field in 2017 during Fall Town meeting.

The Community Preservation Committee allocates funds every year for a variety of community projects through the state’s Community Preservation Act in four categories: open space, historic preservation, affordable housing and recreation.

This money is then raised through a surcharge on property tax bills with the state matching a percentage of this town-raised money after it’s been approved at Town Meeting.

“The support of voters is what made this all possible,” said Community Preservation Committee Co-Chair Sandy Slavin. “Without them, the committee couldn’t do anything.”

The modernized stand was finished with help from numerous volunteers and the Athletic Booster Club which raises money for sports programs and facilities through private donations and fundraising.

The Wareham Tigers Athletic Association and their members volunteered funds and time to project and WCTV installed the field’s upgraded sound system for free.

“The old stand wasn’t safe to operate anymore,” said Booster Club member Joyce Bacchiocchi. “But now we have something all of our sporting events can use.”

The subsequent ribbon cutting ceremony came not a moment too soon as hungry Vikings fans were already lined up and waiting.

“It’s a welcoming sight,” Palladino said. “And it’s something all of us can be proud of.”
