Wareham Barber Shop to host fundraiser for child with rare blood disorder
By Caitlin Russell
When Keri Savoia heard about the plight of Wareham 5-year-old Cody Nickerson, who was recently diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, she took action.
In an effort to help Cody’s family pay for medical expenses and bills, Keri put out a collection jar at Wareham Barber Shop on Main Street, where she and her father and shop-owner, Mario, cut hair.
But the jar had its limits as a fundraising tool. It “didn’t work very well unless we asked every single customer,” Mario said.
So Keri and Mario are hoping that a fundraiser will help the family in a bigger way. Called “Cuts for Cody,” the event is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 2, from noon to 5:00 p.m. The shop will donate 50% of the money generated through sales to Cody and his family.
“I have a little girl, and she had lead poisoning,” Keri explained was part of the reason she felt compelled to help. In addition to feeling empathy for Cody, she also realized that her daughter’s condition, while serious, “could have been a lot worse.”
