Wareham Department of Natural Resources issues warning after possible shark sighting

Sep 19, 2018

A great white shark may have been spotted near the entrance of the Cape Cod Canal, according to the Wareham Department of Natural Resources.

The shark was reportedly seen on Sunday, Sept. 16. Wareham officials said the shark was reported to be 12 feet long and was spotted between Stony Point Dike and Wings Neck. Officials noted no beaches were closed.

The report comes in the wake of the state’s first fatal shark attack in over 80 years, which occurred on Saturday, Sept. 15, off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet. Arthur Medici, 26, of Revere died after being bitten while boogie boarding.

“We are posting this just to raise awareness,” according to a post on the Wareham Department of Natural Resources’ Facebook page.
