Wareham Free Library joins in Star Wars Reads Day

The Force is what gives a Jedi her power – and it was certainly strong with the Wareham Free Library Saturday, during Star Wars Reads Day.
The Main Branch put on its first monthly theme day on Saturday, Oct. 10, to coincide with the fourth annual Star Wars Reads Day, an international event put on by libraries, bookstores, and other retailers around the world.
Reference services librarian Deb Rich said her colleague Kathy Murphy had suggested the idea, as an upcoming event.
“She said, ‘Let’s do Star Wars Reads Day!’, and Marcia [Hickey] said, ‘I have the perfect book!’,” Rich said, referring to a Star Wars pop-up book from the 1990s in the library’s display case. “So, we all rallied around that.”
For the day, the librarians had decorated the library space with everything Star Wars, from books and movies to an entire display case containing Star Wars memorabilia dating back to the (actual) third movie, “Return of the Jedi”, as well as the delicate pop-up book that inspired the whole thing. A boombox stationed next to a few coloring pages also played the soundtrack of “A New Hope”, underneath a fleece blanket emblazoned with the Millennium Falcon up for raffle.
Rich said the library is going to put on a theme day every month, as it is “trying to get back into the public eye, and doing monthly things.”
“We were so discouraged and shut down by the city that we hadn’t done anything in a while,” Rich said. “We are trying the positivity approach, as opposed to the negativity approach. So far, it seems to be working. People seem to be embracing us again.”
Though next month’s theme day has yet to be nailed down, Rich said the theme will be games.
