Wareham girls basketball makes room for Molly
The team might not have prevailed on the court, but the Wareham girls basketball program was certainly a winner on Saturday night. The Lady Vikings hosted the inaugural Wareham Winter Classic basketball tournament, a fundraiser for a local family in need.
The two-day tournament featured Wareham, New Bedford, Sandwich and Foxboro girls basketball teams and raised $2,000 for the "Make room for Molly" fund. The fund benefits the Govoni family of Wareham and their young daughter, Molly.
Wareham basketball coach Dave Brogioli partnered with the Dick Melloni Youth Foundation to put on the tournament, which was originally set to benefit Massachusetts General Hospital. Brogioli decided, however, it would be better to do something for a local cause.
Molly, who turns four this month, is not yet able to speak, stand or walk, roll over, crawl, bring food to her mouth or chew and is wheelchair dependent. Molly has eight diagnoses, some overlapping. Her main diagnosis is Septo-Optic Dysplasia, a disorder of early brain development. She also has uncontrolled epilepsy, Cerebral Vision Impairment, legal blindness, and Global Development Delay. These conditions contribute to her seizures, movement, coordination, vision, communication, sensory, feeding and digestive issues, as well as significant cognitive delays.
Brogioli knew the Govonis (Molly's father Tim played basketball at Wareham High School) and approached them with the idea.
"I knew the situation they had and hoped we could make a few bucks for them," he said.
Molly's mother Jen explained that many additions need to be put on their house in order to make it handicap accessible. This includes a bedroom with large closets and a fully handicapped accessible bathroom with a large walk/roll in shower and an outside handicap ramp built from the driveway to the house.
Jen's cousin created a webpage where people can donate to the Govonis and the site has raised nearly $16,000 of its $20,000 goal. Jen said she hopes the basketball tournament fundraiser can help bridge that gap.
On Saturday, Foxboro defeated Sandwich 57-29 and New Bedford beat Wareham 44-40. Foxboro took home the title on Sunday, defeating New Bedford 58-22 in the championship game. Wareham beat Sandwich 39-31 to win the consolation game.
While the family has pursued grant funds and does have the online fundraiser, Tim and Jen said they have never experienced a community outreach event like this before.
"Driving over here I was just trying to keep my emotions in check," Tim said. "It feels really good. It makes me proud to be from Wareham."
