Wareham man charged with attempted murder after Monday night shooting
Two Wareham men were arrested Tuesday in connection with a Monday night shooting in East Wareham that left one man in the hospital, according to police.
Wareham Police said 25-year-old resident Jonathan Depina has been charged with assault with attempt to murder after he allegedly shot a man with a shotgun during an argument in front of his home at 50 Mayflower Lane on Monday night.
On Monday, May 12 at 11:50 p.m., Wareham police officers responded to the area of 50 Mayflower Lane in East Wareham regarding a reported disturbance and the sound of gunshots. According to police, while enroute to the scene, officers were advised of a white Lincoln Continental driving out of the neighborhood. The vehicle was stopped on Glen Charlie Road.
Police said as Sgt. Dan Henderson and Officer Stephen Kearney approached the vehicle, they were made aware of 24-year-old Alberto Velasquez in the back seat, who reported he had been shot with a shotgun (birdshot pellets) in the stomach and leg areas. Wareham EMS responded to the scene and transported Velasquez to Tobey Hospital with apparent non-life-threatening wounds.
An arrest warrant was issued for 25-year-old Wareham resident Jonathan Depina and a search warrant was issued for his house on Mayflower Lane.
According to police, Depina was placed under arrest without incident during a motor vehicle stop near his home at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13.
Members of the Wareham Police Department along with the state Police Special Tactical Operations Team executed the search warrant without incident and no weapon has not been recovered as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday according to officials.
Depina has been charged with two counts of assault with attempt to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
A second male placed under arrest with Depina was 22-year-old Jordan Pimental, also a resident of 50 Mayflower Lane, who was charged with accessory after the fact, due to his involvement in the incident after Velasquez was shot. Both parties will be arraigned at Wareham 4th District Court.
