A Wareham man was arrested and charged with numerous felonies last Friday, including drug possession and operation under the influence of alcohol, according to Wareham police.

Aaron Monteiro, 39, was arrested after officers were told to be on the lookout for a blue SUV that hit a parked vehicle on Onset Avenue, then sped away towards Onset Center, shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, according to police.

Police said Officer Greg Hutson found Monteiro parked in Onset Center and as he approached, Monteiro got out of the car, dropped a glass of alcohol and ran as other officers arrived on the scene. Hutson chased Monteiro on foot and brought him to the ground. Police used a taser to subdue Monteiro after he aggressively resisted arrest.

Police said a substance believed to be cocaine was found in the back seat of Monteiro’s car. Police also found a plastic bag of suspected cocaine in the floor of the back seat, as well as in Monteiro’s waistband.

Monteiro has been charged with operating under the influence of alcohol; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident; disorderly conduct; disturbing the peace; resisting arrest; possession of a Class B substance (cocaine); and operating with a suspended license.

Monteiro was arraigned Aug. 3 in the Wareham District Court.
