Wareham Police rally to help one of their own

Jul 1, 2013

The Wareham Police Department is rallying around a 27-year veteran of the force who is battling cancer.

Friends from the department have established the "Fluegel Fund" in support of 52-year-old officer Paul Fluegel, who has been suffering from cancer for more than a year.

As expenses and medical bills add up, friends are hoping to raise $25,000 to ensure that the officer only needs to focus on one thing: getting better.

Fluegel, whose income supports his wife and four young children, recently filed for his retirement from the department due to his illness, but has been advised that it will take approximately six months before he will begin receiving benefits. His sick and vacation time will soon run out.

Donations are being accepted in any amount though the fundraising website GiveForward. To donate, visit: https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/v7l2/paul-fluegel-s-fund.

In addition to serving on the Wareham Police Department, Fluegel has also been active in Wareham Little League and Pop Warner Football, has opened his home to Wareham Gatemen players, and has served as a mentor to youth in the community.
