The Wareham boys and girls track and field is off and running as the season progresses.
Assistant coach Jackson Cote said the Vikings have embraced the challenge of competing with smaller rosters while still producing strong scoring results.
“We’re not really able to compete with most teams from a numbers standpoint,” Cote said. “But from the group that we do have, they do well.”
Both the boys and girls teams finished the regular-season conference slate with 2-2 records, according to Cote, who said the season has moved quickly as the teams now prepare for the conference championship meet in two weeks.
“It’s gone well,” Cote said. “From there, it would just be divisional, and hopefully a couple of kids will qualify for that and then maybe go on to states.”
Despite low participation numbers, Cote said the athletes have exceeded expectations by taking on multiple events each meet to help maximize team points.
“Most of them are competing in the maximum amount of events every meet, so they can get us the amount of points that we need to compete with other teams,” he said. “A lot of them have to do a lot of different events.”
That versatility has become a defining trait for the program this season. Rather than specializing in a single event, many athletes are balancing running and field competitions throughout meets.
“There’s not really anybody on this team that does just one event and just focuses on that one event,” Cote said. “They all do a good amount of events, whether it’s two field and two running events or they’re doing three running events.”
Cote said the team’s unity and willingness to embrace difficult circumstances have stood out the most.
“I think they’re just sticking together and really embracing the challenge of being a smaller team,” he said.
As the postseason approaches, Wareham’s goals remain straightforward: perform well at the conference championship meet, earn medals and advance athletes deeper into the state tournament.
“I would say for the kids to do well in our conference meet,” Cote said. “Hopefully we can get a couple medals from the kids. And then, for the ones that are qualified for divisional, to do well there.”
