Wareham Vikings preparing to take on Bourne in annual Thanksgiving match-up
In one of the oldest rivalries on the South Coast, the Wareham High School Vikings football team will take on the Bourne Canalmen in the annual Thanksgiving Day match-up next week.
"Neither team is going to the playoffs," explained Wareham High School Athletic Director Steven Rumbolt. "This is their Superbowl."
At that energy to the fact that the Vikings will have nine wins if they defeat Bourne — an accomplishment that only five South Coast Conference teams in the last 20 years can boast — and are coming off a 42-0 loss in the 2011 Thanksgiving game.
In short: It should be an exciting one!
Rumbolt is hoping to see more than 1,000 fans at Spillane Field for the game, which begins at 10 a.m.
"A lot of people are coming home, they're seeing friends," he noted. "The crowds are usually the best of the year."
Tickets cost $5 and are available at Wareham High School, at the Jug Shop on Main Street, or at the The Shirt Shack on Marion Road.
Get to the game early to get a good seat. A presentation honoring the senior players for both football teams, as well as the cheerleaders and band members, will take place at 9:30 a.m.
"We're trying to start a tradition to honor the seniors," said Rumbolt.
