Wareham Weekend!

Jun 27, 2013

When there are weekend events happening over the summer, Wareham Week will feature them in this little round-up we like to call Wareham Weekend.

Got something you’d like to see here? Be sure to e-mail Editor Jaime Rebhan with the details at jaime@warehamweek.com.

Here’s what’s happening in Wareham this weekend.

Friday, June 28

Main Street Madness

Main Street Madness returns to downtown Wareham on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by the Wareham Village Association, the event encourages people to shop and dine local.

The Showstoppers singing troupe will perform from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Main Street merchants will offer deals, raffles, and more. A total of 19 businesses are participating.

Saturday, June 29

Kayak Poker Run

The Onset Bay Association's annual Kayak Poker Run and Cape Cod Kayak Show is scheduled for Saturday at Shell Point. Registration begins at 9 a.m. for a 10 a.m. launch.

Paddlers make their way through Sunset Cove and Onset Bay, picking up a playing card at various locations, before returning to Shell Point to determine who has the best poker hand.

Participants of all abilities can play. It costs $25 to ante up. If you don't like your hand, you can purchase new cards — and hope for better results — for $2 per card.

Rental kayaks will be available through Onset's Nemasket Kayak Center at a cost of $30. Call 774-501-2205 to 508-944-2539 to make a reservation.

The Shell Point parking lot is accessed off of West Boulevard in Onset. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Onset Bay Association.

Cranberry Blossom Festival

The first ever Cranberry Blossom Festival will be hosted by the A.D. Makepeace Company on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 146 Tihonet Road. Admission is free.

There will be plenty of activities throughout the day, including $5 cranberry bog tours, nature walks and a cranberry-apple pie eating contest. Kids will be able to partake in a number of classic games, such as a hay bale maze and paddle boat rides.

There will be a cookbook release ceremony for the annual "Make it Better with Cranberries" cookbook, which features the winning recipes from a 2012 cooking contest. The event will be at the Box Mill Hall. There will be samples of the concoctions from the cookbook available.

Cranberry products, baked goods, and ice cream will be available for purchase, and a wagon will be loaded with local produce.

Old Company Store celebrates 20 years

The Old Company Store will celebrate its 20th birthday on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its 5 Elm Street location.

The celebration will feature local vendors, live music by Daddy-O and Brenna, a live guitar and vocal performance by Shawn England, and performances by the Showstoppers. Cool 102 radio will be on hand.

A tie-dye table, balloon animals, and face-painting will be offered for a small fee.

The event will also serve as the launch of the store's "Saturdays in the Park," during which vendors, "pop-up shops," and authors will set up in Parker's Park, located between the Old Company Store and the historic Salt Box House.

Parker's Park will be open to vendors each Saturday from June 29 to August 17. For more information, visit www.oldcompanystore.com.
