Warming the South Coast one stitch at a time

Every Tuesday morning, a group of women gather at the Trinity Christian Church to knit, crochet and share coffee all in the name of a good cause.

Mission Stitchin' donates their knitted and crocheted creations throughout the South Coast to organizations that help those in need.

Judy Hyland helped establish it about four years ago and said the idea started from an abundance of yarn.

"One day we all just said it would be nice to get together and make things for nursing homes and people in need," said Hyland.

Since the group was founded, they have made hats, blankets, baby clothes as well as more exotic items like ponchos.

Mission Stitchin’ donates to Turning Point, a Wareham based organization dedicated to battling homelessness, nursing homes, various pantries and recently to a halfway house in New Bedford.

"I figured it would be nice because the people there are going through a really tough time," said Hyland.

Due to the cold temperatures this winter, she said the group has been making a lot of hats and donating them to Damien's Food Pantry for distribution to those in need.

"They said they had 1,200 people that went there to get food last month," said Hyland. "It's been rough and it's been cold this year but donating makes you feel good."

Helping those in need runs in the family according to Hyland. She said her father worked at an orphanage and for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children for 33 years.

She said he instilled the importance of helping those in need in her and after being a nurse for 50 years, crocheting clothes for people in need is how she chooses to help.

Hyland said the group has a personal benefit as well because the members are able to do something they enjoy and have fun together.

"We'll have coffee and snacks and we all look out for each other," said Hyland. "If somebody doesn't come we'll check to see if they're okay and it's just a positive vibe."
