Wishes take root at Wareham Historical Society ceremony

Aug 19, 2018

Back in 2014, as part of the town’s 275th anniversary celebration, hundreds of residents scribbled wishes on pieces of paper. The plan was to bury those wishes under a tree at the town green in a ceremony dedicated to Wareham’s past, present and future.

Wareham Historical Society President Angela Dunham said the idea was to have the wishes decompose and become part of the soil used by the tree.

Due to issues with securing a spot on the town green, which ultimately didn't happen, the ceremony didn’t take place until Sunday. That’s when a small group gathered at the Old Methodist Meeting House before the historical society’s annual ice cream social and concert for the ceremony.

“We hope that this tree’s roots will take the wishes up to heaven,” said Dunham before placing them in a hole dug in the ground. A small tree growing nearby was dedicated as the community wishing tree.

Afterwards, the historical society held its end of summer event, complete with folk music from Wareham’s own Grace Morrison.
