“Not like it was:” Shoppers see serene Black Friday
“It’s not like how it was years ago, no one's punching people in the face for an $80 TV anymore,” said Matthew Veloz who was working at the Wareham Crossing Target on Black Friday, Nov. 29.
Although parking was limited and stores were full, the environment was tranquil for the post Thanksgiving shoppers at Wareham Crossing.
“It’s the best shopping place close to the cape it really is. It's got all the different stores we like to go to and it's great deals,” said Lisa Lipsett, a Sandwich resident who comes to Wareham every year for Black Friday sales.
“It’s part of our thanksgiving tradition and our other daughter is expecting her first baby so we got a lot of baby clothes this year,” Lipsett said.
Lipsett was not the only person who said they traveled to Wareham for Black Friday deals.
Samantha Torres lives in Fairhaven and said she comes to Wareham Crossing because there aren’t as many people.
Many shoppers attributed the smaller crowds to online shopping and less time restrictions on finding deals.
“It seems to be the easier place to navigate and get in and out,” Torres said.
Liz and Ed McGonagle traveled from Falmouth for Wareham Crossing’s outdoor shopping experience.
“It’s a beautiful day and we just decided we were going to try something new so we came down here,” Liz McGonagle said.
Veloz said proper staffing and good organization have kept things running smoothly for Black Friday at Target for the last several years. He added that the pandemic ended the practice of midnight sales, when stores opened as soon Thanksgiving day ended at midnight.
Abbie Tonello, who has been working as a Target cashier for just two weeks, said Black Friday wasn't "too overwhelming."
“We’re well staffed so not too crazy,” Tonello said. “Getting thrown in is the best way to figure it out.”
Veloz did mention that this year there was a line at the entrance before Target’s doors opened at 6 a.m. but that the approximately 80 people were there for the “Taylor Swift Experience,” presale copies of the artists book and a deluxe vinyl.
Veloz, who has worked in retail for nine years, said he enjoys the busy holiday season.
“It’s just a lot of fun. I was born in the generation of online shopping so I don't really have any super crazy memories for it,” Veloz said.
