Onset man arrested after police find loaded gun
A 21-year-old Onset man was arrested Saturday for possession of a loaded firearm without a permit and assault and battery on a police officer.
According to police, Marcus Gomes was pulled over while driving a car at 3 a.m. on Feb. 1 on Minot Ave. in the area of the East Wareham Fire Station.
Police said Gomes' behavior during the stop led officer Nate Aronson and others to conduct an investigation, leading to the finding of a loaded .45 semi-automatic handgun in the glove compartment of the vehicle.
According to officials, as the search of the glove compartment was taking place, Gomes became uncooperative and attempted to run from the scene, but was apprehended after a brief struggle with officers.
Cash in the amount of $885 was seized from Gomes as possible evidence.
Interim Chief Kevin Walsh praised the actions of the officers involved in this incident, which served as a reminder of the dangers that can arise during a “routine traffic stop."
Gomes was charged with possession of a loaded firearm without a permit, possession of ammunition without a permit, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer. He was set to be arraigned on Monday, Feb. 3 at Wareham District Court.
Gomes was a member of the 2010 Wareham Vikings basketball team that won the school's first state championship.
