Onset Bay Association collects bottles for beauty

Aug 3, 2015

Onset Bay Association members transformed trash into treasure Monday morning, as they collected bottles and cans to raise money for the organization’s Beautification Committee.

Association member Kathy Judd said the committee takes care of the flowers on the Stone Bridge, as well as the plants at Dudley Square and the Onset Bandshell. She said upkeep of these areas is not cheap, especially since the association is a nonprofit organization that principally raises money through donations and fundraisers.

Beautification Committee Chairwoman Lorraine McDonald said the committee can use all the help it can get to keep the spaces looking nice. The association pays for all of the mulch and plants, because “the town has no money.”

“It’s $36 per yard, so it’s expensive,” McDonald said. “And all these new plantings, which were maybe $200, or more.”

But the committee has not done all the work alone. Judd said the group has physical labor help from local Bob Hough and other landscape volunteers.

“They’ve gone down and cleaned up the trash on the pier, swept up the sand,” Judd said. “They’ve done the Grassia Bridge, the weeds, the grass … There’s a whole team, so we are just raising money so we can do more.”

The Onset Bay Association will be holding another can and bottle collection Aug. 24, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dudley Square.
