Seniors awarded scholarships for MCAS test scores
For their achievement on the MCAS testing, 29 seniors in Wareham High School were awarded a scholarship that may save the students thousands of dollars in college tuition.
The students were recognized in front of the School Committee on Wednesday night.
The state-funded John and Abigail Adams Scholarships, given to those in the top 25 percent of MCAS scores in their graduating class, provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university.
"Just to put that in context, you're looking at almost $8,000 over their four years that they will save," said Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino.
Asked by committee member Geoff Swett whether they thought they would take advantage of the scholarship and attend a Massachusetts state school, only five of those present at the meeting raised their hands -- as others looked tentative.
The question "may be a little premature," Palladino noted, since the students haven't received word on acceptance or scholarship awards from other colleges to which they have applied.
The winners of the scholarship are: Elisa Abbott, Miguel Acosta III, Adrianna Adams, Makayla Cannata, Gerard Casale, Neely Eddleston, Asher Gentry, Blanca Giron, Catalina Giron, Abigail Glidden, Anthony Gomes, Jack Goodwin-Gilson, Elizabeth Griffith, Joseph Hogan, Michael Houdlette, Maura Johnson, Bridgette King, Madison Koslowsky, Brett McSherry, Derek Miller, Alyssa Perry, Amilya Putzig, Christopher Santiago, Daniel Smith, Addison Staley, Sara Tyma, Paige Vermilya, Abigail Wood and Lisa Wynne.
