Black Friday shoppers search for deals in Wareham

Nov 25, 2016

The hunt for a good deal was on early Friday morning as shoppers lined up at Target in Wareham Crossing before doors opened at 1 a.m.

Front End Manager John Kappel said shoppers turned out for deals on electronics and this year’s most-wanted toy, Hatchimals.

“That’s been a really big item,” said Kappel. “They’re basically a modern Furby, it’s a toy that hatches from an egg and everybody wants one. People line up for them everyday outside the store.”

Kappel said the Wareham store was prepared for the crowd with police on duty, barriers in place to corral shoppers and a plan to let people inside in waves, to prevent overcrowding.

The waiting crowd seemed excited and amused, despite the drizzly weather.

Kappel said the store had a surge of activity from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., then a lull, before picking back up again in the afternoon.

“We had a bit of a break, which allowed us to get some work done around the store,” he said on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. “It’s back to being busy, we’re really rocking right now.”

Once inside, shoppers were notified when popular items were sold out by employees.

“No Hatchimals. No GPSes. No hopes and dreams,” joked one Target employee.

Safety was also on the minds of staff and shoppers alike.

“You can’t run,” one woman said to a man as they waited to enter the store.

“I can run. Don’t worry!” he responded.

But it wasn't a question of whether a person had the ability to run. A Target employee, acting as the gatekeeper, responded in a chipper voice, "No running," before letting more shoppers into the store.  “Have fun,” the employee added. “Be safe.”
