Kids dig deep at third annual Sandcastle Day in Onset

Rodney Johnson, better known as “Mr. Sandman” at Onset Beach, has a mission in life.

“I want people to appreciate the simple things,” said Johnson. “I’m trying to get kids off video games and back into the dirt.”

On Sunday, Johnson served as the sand castle guru to the 23 kids who participated in the Onset Bay Association’s third annual Sandcastle Day.

While kids and parents constructed their own sandcastles on the shoreline, Johnson was sculpting a shark out of the sand, complete with colors and prop body parts.

A Brockton resident, Johnson has been doing sand sculptures at beaches all over the state for the last 13 years.

While Johnson worked on his sculpture, he also provided tips and support for the families involved. Additionally, the Onset Bay Association provided decorations for kids to add to their sandy creations.
