Water main flushing begins May 9
The Wareham Water Department will be flushing the district’s water mains beginning on Monday, May 9. The flushing is scheduled to continue through the beginning of July.
Because of the nature of the work, it is not possible to predetermine how long the flushing of a given area will take. Each day a specific and isolated area is flushed. Water Department crews will be flushing from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
This work is being done as part of the Wareham Fire District’s annual water main and fire hydrant preventive maintenance program. Flushing removes sediment that accumulates in water pipes that possibly could produce bacteria if not removed. This is important to Wareham since the District does not disinfect all of its water supply, according to a Water Department press release.
Customers should be aware of the potential for dirty and discolored water. This is a temporary situation resulting from the change in velocity/flushing of the pipes. The water may also be cloudy or white looking, due to air entrapped in the water.
All water system users are cautioned to check the water for clarity. Should you experience dirty water, simply wait for a period of time and it will clear up.
As a precaution against bacteria, the Water Department will be adding a low dosage of chlorine to the water during flushing operations.
