Commercial soft shell clam regulations receive approval for season

Oct 18, 2017

Commercial soft shell clam regulations have been approved for another year after a unanimous vote by the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday.

Wareham Harbormaster Garry Buckminster explained that commercial soft shell clam harvesting will be permitted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so the fishery doesn’t become depleted.

Commercial harvesting is not permitted when the air temperature is below 32 degrees or on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day, and only between sunrise and half an hour after sunset.

Two level bushes of clams per permit may be gathered commercially. The only authorized equipment for soft shell clam harvesting is rakes and plungers.

These commercial regulations do not impact recreational shellfish harvesting.

The full regulations will be available this week from the Harbormaster and Shellfish Department in the Multi-Service Center.
