Kendrick House employee accused of stealing prescription drugs from veterans

Jun 23, 2011

Kendrick House employee Pamela Silverberg of Bourne is accused of stealing prescription drugs from disabled veterans living at the facility located at 74 High Street.

Earlier this month, Silverberg was cited for drug larceny and possession by Wareham Police. The investigation is now being handled federally by the U.S. Office of Inspector General for Veterans Affairs.

"We responded to the home twice. Once on June 2, once on June 9, after a manager reported an employee had stolen [prescription] drugs," said Bill Fihlman, public information officer for the Wareham Police Department.

No arrest was made. Silverberg was summonsed for arrest on both occasions. The police, however, will not pursue an arrest warrant now that the case is being federally investigated, Fihlman said.

A community resident care coordinator with the Providence Veteran Affairs Medical Center pointed out the missing prescription drugs upon a routine visit to Kendrick House, which prompted management to alert police, according to Tom Antonaccio, public affairs officer for the Providence Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Antonaccio said the organization does routine checks of these types of facilities in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts to verify that they are up to code and that procedures are being followed.

“There was no evidence the veterans were harmed in any way,” Antonaccio said in reference to the incident at Kendrick House.

The Providence Veteran Affairs Medical Center will be continuing its investigation on this matter. Neither the Providence Veteran Affairs Medical Center nor the U.S. Office of Inspector General for Veterans Affairs would release any further details on the case since the investigation is ongoing.

Antonaccio added that the families of the veterans living at Kendrick House were notified of the investigation.

It is unclear whether or not Silverberg is still working at Kendrick House. The facility's management declined to comment.

Kendrick House has a long history in Wareham. The building served as a hotel for many years until it became a home for disabled veterans.
