Shellfishing ban lifted in Wareham

Nov 27, 2018

Shellfishing in the Wareham and Weweantic Rivers has been reopened in the wake of a sewage leak at a Swifts Beach pumping station.

Wareham Department of Natural Resources officials announced the ban on Sunday after the leak was discovered at the Smith Avenue pump station, located at 5 Smith Ave. The leak was found at 9:30 a.m. Officials had it under control at 11:30 a.m.

The ban was put in place because it was unclear how much sewage may have discharged into Buzzards Bay, sewer officials said at the time.

Officials lifted the ban after water quality tests showed bacteria levels were normal.
