Wareham High School hosts pep rally, honors mascot's 20 years of service
What do a viking, Waldo, and one of the Angry Birds have in common? They were all spotted at Wareham High School's pep rally Friday afternoon.
The pep rally, the final event of Spirit Week, was held in anticipation of the Cranberry Bowl game against Old Rochester Regional High School Friday night. (Wareham won, 14-6!)
Principal Scott Palladino honored Hodar, the Wareham Viking, with a plaque for his 20 years of service to the school.
"We hope he's going to be out there for another 20," Palladino said.
Hodar told Wareham Week that he did not want his identity to be revealed.
In addition to musical performances from the marching band and The Swag, a rock band comprised of Wareham students, Brie—an aspiring R&B artist—performed two songs and emceed a dance contest competition between the classes.
Brie said this was her first time performing at a high school pep rally and told the crowd she had "never seen so much school spirit in [her] life."
"I had a blast!" she said after the rally finished, adding that she had visited some of the classes earlier that day to talk to the students about college and following your dreams.
Freshman Teddy Mathews, who recently performed in Bog Fright Night's "Thriller" performance, won Brie's dance competition.
Though a few of his classmates were hesitant to get out on the floor, Mathews said he wasn't intimidated at all about dancing in front of the student body. He added that he enjoyed Brie's music and he would definitely be following her on Twitter.
"He was such a good dancer," Brie said. "I'm going to give him a call in like eight years [to come on tour with me]."
Brie's visit was prompted by her manager, Jillian Almeida, a 2005 graduate of the high school.
"I feel old now," Almeida said, laughing, adding that she's glad she as the opportunity to give back to her alma mater.
In addition to the musical performances, captains from the fall sports teams competed in an obstacle course and the classes competed against each other in a trivia bowl featuring facts about the high school and the town.
