Gleason Family Y meets goal, will complete expansion

Jan 4, 2012

Through purchases of lanyards, beads, and engraved bricks, to attendance of fashion shows, a Zumbathon, and a weight-lifting competition, to donations and multi-year pledges, YMCA members and friends raised $400,000 since April 15.

Thanks to a $400,000 match from the Penzance Foundation "challenge grant," the Gleason Family YMCA will be able to complete its expansion. The $800,000 will be used for a new multi-purpose room and adult locker rooms with steam and sauna.

The existing locker rooms will be dedicated to the youth.

"Now I can breathe a sigh of relief," said Hannah Moore, chair of the Y's Expansion Steering Committee. "For me, championing the Y expansion has been about remembering and honoring Drs. [Charles "Sherm" and Betty] Gleason and their life commitment to the well-being of this community and region."

The Y is proceeding with construction plans and expects to complete the expansion by July.

"I couldn't be more pleased [about] how the local community came together to help fulfill Dr. Gleason's vision," said Gleason Family YMCA Executive Director Laura Prisco. "Even though he is not with us to see the project to completion, he is with us in mind and spirit, and lives within the Gleason family members who have continued their support of our YMCA."

The Gleasons' son, Bob, said he knows his parents would be proud of the communitys support in meeting the Penzance Foundation's challenge grant.

"Keeping the Gleason Family YMCA growing to meet the needs of the community is something that we as a family will strive to do to keep my parents' legacy going on for years to come," Bob Gleason said. "Knowing the money is now there for the completion of the locker rooms and general exercise room is wonderful!"
