Covanta/SEMASS, which operates a large “Energy-from Waste” processing facility in Rochester, will partner with the Wareham Unit of the Boys & Girls Club to develop programs designed to increase the rate of recycling in the Town of Wareham.

Mark Davis, Plant Manager at Covanta/SEMASS, said “We see this as a win-win opportunity.  Covanta/SEMASS will provide financial support to benefit the Boys & Girls Club, specifically the Club’s Kukoo Goes Green programs of environmental awareness; the Town of Wareham will benefit from educational outreach programs and initiatives developed by the Boys & Girls Club to promote recycling; and, Covanta will be helping to achieve its corporate goal of increasing recycling and reducing trash in the communities it serves.”

Covanta/SEMASS has made a gift of $7,500 to support the Kukoo Goes Green programs and the Kukoo Gala and Auction which will be held on June 1 at the Kittansett Club in Marion.

Ken Fontes, Director of the Wareham Unit of the Boys & Girls Club Wareham Unit, said “We are excited to be working with Covanta/SEMASS and grateful for their financial support.  Our kids have been studying environmental issues since February and in the months ahead we hope to have programs in place that allow them, and everyone in Wareham, to recycle more effectively.”

Covanta Energy operates and/or has ownership positions in 44 energy-from-waste facilities around the country.  The Covanta/SEMASS unit processes up to 3,000 tons of refuse per day collected from 60 Massachusetts cities and towns; that waste is converted to electricity sufficient to power more than 75,000 homes.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham has facilities in New Bedford and Wareham serving 1,100 members ages 7 -18.  The Club offers programs and activities that promote Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.
