Geoff Swett has been named the Girls Tennis Coach of the year by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

“Coach Swett is very deserving of this award and has put in countless hours for many years coaching our student-athletes,” said Principal Scott Palladino. “It's not unusual to see Coach Swett running free clinics during the offseason to younger students that reside in Wareham. He has truly built a very strong program that has competed at the state level for the last few years.”

According to the MIAA, the award seeks to honor teacher-coaches who have impacted students’ lives by encouraging them to succeed and helping develop confidence, work ethic, ambition or other traits.

Asked by the association to describe his coaching philosophy, Swett said: “I enter each new season reminding myself that coaching is a privilege; that the students’ families are entrusting me to safely help them develop their children’s bodies, minds, and characters. I also want the athletes to develop a love for the sport and a respect for their competitors; to treat their opponents the way they would want to be treated. Finally, one of the team’s goals is always to have fun, as I want the stress of adolescence to be at least partly relieved by their participation on a team.”
