Harbormaster shuts Onset launch service ahead of storm

Aug 3, 2020

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources and the Harbormaster has closed the Onset launch service, which will remain shut until Wednesday, due to a Tropical Storm Warning.

Tropical Storm Isaias is making its way up the east coast, and could cause scattered torrential downpours, thunderstorms, tornados, and varying gusts of wind from the southeast, south, and southwest at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.

The Harbormaster’s office advises boaters to take the warning seriously and take steps to keep themselves and their vessel safe: ensuring chafe gear is in place, charging batteries fully, and making sure bilge pumps are working properly.

Those staying on a boat should file a float plan with a friend or family member, and keep communications open.

Cellular service could go out, but the Department of Natural Resources will be monitoring VHF 09 and 16.

Those riding out should wear a lifejacket.
