Kicking it into gear with the vikings girls soccer team
Wareham Week is catching up with each team with goals to get the scoop on the upcoming season, who the players to watch are and more.
Vikings girls soccer is kicking it in to gear this year coming off of a 4 win 13 loss season. Wareham Week Reporter Brandy Muz went down to practice to talk with Head Coach Madison Catarius.
Q: How are you feeling about the season and what are the expectations?
A: So far so good with this season. We've had a few injuries but as of right now I'm proud of these girls. We're working hard. Expectations are obviously to win— to improve from last season. We want to improve our skills and improve overall as a team.
Q: What has changed from last year to this year?
A: Not much. We only lost one senior and we lost one of our midfielders— she transferred. Honestly, they're good soccer players and good athletes so that's really nice to have.
Q: What are the team’s strengths and what are some areas for improvement?
A: Our defense is our top strength. We have a solid starting four that we usually play with and they all play well together. They move well together too— through practice I tell them to focus on each other and they do. We've got to score some goals— I think that's our main concern. We got to get some confidence and score some goals because how else are we going to win?
Q: Who are the players to watch for this year?
A: Sophia Nascimento, Sienna Cabe, Natalie Kearns and Julia Young. I'd say those are my tops right there.
Q: What are you looking forward to this season?
A: This is my first year coaching varsity, I've been with this group as the JV coach for a few years so I'm really excited to be the "leader" with them. I love them, honestly. It's great coaching with them, they're a bunch of good girls.
The Vikings started their season with a tie against Upper Cape Cod Reg Voc/Tech High School Friday, Sept. 5. With a 0 to 3 to 2 score as of Sunday, Sept. 28, Catarius said that the team is serious about the game— but they do laugh and have fun together.
