Opinion: Trucks shatter pavement and peace in Onset

To the Editor:

I live at 295 Onset Ave. across from Lopes Playground. I've lived here for almost 15 years and every year the traffic seems to get worse, even in the off season.

My main concern right now is with dump trucks and giant, heavy construction trucks with 1 or 2 trailers filled with dirt and other construction materials. In the past week it has been unbelievable how many trucks are rumbling by my house all day. I was up at 6:30 this morning and by 8:30, 15 trucks had already gone by!

I realize there is a lot of construction going on, like at Bay Point, but I've gotten behind a couple of them that didn't turn in there.

Is there any kind of load limit on Onset Avenue? If not, there should be to prevent the Onset Avenue pavement from cracking and breaking down. Not to mention the ancient stone bridge that was built in 1914. I'm surprised it has held up under the weight of these trucks constantly going over it.

Ideally, I would love a NO THRU TRUCKS sign on Onset Avenue, but I know that will never happen. Still, some of them could be rerouted to our nice, new Cranberry Highway and wear out a state road instead of one that the taxpayers in Onset and Wareham will ultimately be paying to repave sooner than necessary thanks to these trucks.
