Owl’s well that ends well: Wareham’s new animal control officer rescues baby owl on Day 1

Wareham’s new animal control officer, Devin Cloutier, had a busy first day of work when she helped rescue a baby owl that got blown down by the wind storm earlier this week.

“Everything’s going well now,” Cloutier said with a smile on Saturday.

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources posted a recap of the baby owl’s rescue on Facebook.

A property owner in Wareham found the owl downed after the strong wind storm. Cloutier helped bring the owlet — a great horned owl, she said — to the Cape Wildlife Center for treatment.

It’s estimated that the owl was about a week away from being able to leave the nest by itself, Cloutier said.

After getting a clean bill of health from the center, the owlet was returned to a makeshift nest on the property where it was found, with hopes that the mother owl would find it.

A Ring camera installed over the nest confirmed that the owlet was reunited with its family Thursday night, according to the department’s Facebook page. A video posted to Facebook shows a larger owl flying to perch on the makeshift nest, while the two screech at each other in turns.

“He’s a spicy little thing,” Cloutier said laughing as she recounted her first week of work. She added that the property owners had taken to calling the little owl “Hedgey” and “Jeffie,” interchangeably.
