Pick ‘em up quick!: Easter egg tradition back once again in Onset
Event Date:
The Onset Bay Association will continue a spring tradition on April 19 when hundreds of kids charge into Prospect Park and collect thousands of Easter eggs.
All are welcome to come out and collect the roughly 6,000 eggs this year, said Onset Bay Association President Kat Jones.
“The hunt starts right at 11 a.m. and if you’re late you’ll miss it because the eggs usually disappear in under one minute, I kid you not,” Jones said.
Eggs will be color coordinated by age group so that younger children have more of a chance to collect an equal amount.
Kids five and under will have their own section.
“They can take their time and not worry about getting trampled by the larger children,” Jones said.
The event, which the Association has put on for over a decade, usually attracts between 250 and 300 kids.
The event is wheelchair accessible and special needs people of any age are welcome, Jones said.
Weather permitting, some eggs will be tied to balloons so those in wheelchairs can pick them up.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own baskets or bags to collect the eggs. The organizers also ask that kids return the eggs once they’ve been opened so they can be reused next year.
Over the last two weeks a team of 20 volunteers have filled the eggs with nut-free candy donated by local businesses. A few also have dollar bills in them.
“It's a huge task but we have fun with it,” Jones said.
Free parking is available at Onset Pier. Prospect Park is located at 1 Union Ave, in Onset. No registration for the event is required.
“It's a great way to get families out, get the community out, hang out for like 15 minutes and then everybody's gone,” Jones said with a laugh.
