Select Board to communicate disapproval of nuclear waste dumping in Cape Cod Bay

Aug 9, 2023

Select Board Chair Judith Whiteside will send a letter to the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Agency and other government officials to maintain the town’s stance against Holtec International’s proposal to dump its nuclear waste in Cape Cod Bay.

Holtec is an energy technology company that purchased Plymouth's Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station for decommission in 2019.

The plant was permanently closed after 46 years of service, providing electricity to over 7,000 homes, according to Holtec’s website.

The company states that by using its technology, nuclear plants can be decommissioned and ready for other use years sooner than if the original owner were to do it.

However, a part of the decommissioning process for these plants is to dispose of the nuclear waste.

With plans to finish the decommission by 2024, Holtec turned to the possibility of dumping its 1.1 million gallons of nuclear waste into Cape Cod Bay.

Since this idea first came to light, communities have voiced their concerns and disapproval of the proposition, including Wareham’s Select Board.

Whiteside said the Department of Environmental Protection denied the company’s request and has issued a 30-day comment period.

She said, “My personal opinion is that we are nuts to even think of letting people dump anything into any of our waterways.”

The rest of the board agreed and voted 4-0-0 in favor of the letter against the project.
